Condoleezza Rice Home Address

Put safety first, not after the disaster!

"Now it is imperative to secure." How often have you heard this phrase in the aftermath of an earthquake or a flood. It 'was also suggested this week in L'Aquila.
Securing what remains of the houses that do not fall on the earthquake survivors of a disaster is exactly the same as those who ask to be put into a city safe from the risk of further flooding more than likely.
In one case, and those few words are another reminder of the institutions to make sure that no other deaths in addition to those already planted by people living in this land of ours already sorely tried by disasters, too often announced.
To limit ourselves to only the last century and wanting to limit themselves to more or less natural catastrophic events include:
Messina Earthquake of 1908 (about 100,000 victims); 1915 Avezzano earthquake (32,000 dead), earthquake Mugello 1919 (100 deaths); Dam collapse Gleno 1923 (356 victims); Earthquake del Vulture 1930 (1425 victims); Overflowing Lake Ortiglieto 1935 (77 deaths), Flooding in Calabria 1951 (100 deaths); Polesine flood 1951 (84 deaths), Flood of Salerno in 1954 (318 victims); Vajont Massacre of 1963 (about 2000 victims); flood in Florence in 1966 (34 dead), earthquake Belice 1968 (370 victims); Tuscania Earthquake of 1971 (31 killed); Terremoto del Friuli 1976 (965 victims); 1980 Irpinia earthquake (2914 dead); Flood Valtellina 1987 (53 victims), Flood in Piedmont 1994 (70 victims), Flooding in Tuscany 1996 (13 victims), Umbria and Marche Earthquake 1997 (11 dead); Flood 1998 Sarno and Fifteen (159 victims); Flooding in Calabria 2000 (12 victims); Flooding in Piedmont 2000 (23 victims); Earthquake San Giuliano di Puglia 2002 (30 victims); flood and landslide in Villar Pellice 2008 (4 killed), and finally the last catastrophe, but only in order of time, the earthquake in Abruzzo - April 6, 2009 (294 victims).
In just 100 years a sequence of catastrophic events that have caused hundreds of thousands dead, countless wounded and material damage to private and artistic heritage can not be assessed because of their huge size.
Apparently, though, unfortunately this will not suffice. We will still attend to other deaths, injuries and property damage only because that phrase, that with so much emphasis today and already heard too many times in the past, not follow, in the end, as much emphasis on wanting to put into practice.
"too expensive" is often said to those who propose solutions aimed at least to narrow those disasters, since the total security can never be objectively foreseeable.
In the case of seismic zones, however, should be deemed "imperative to secure" the houses with earthquake-resistant devices (perhaps in the right doses mixing sand, cement and iron rods), whereas in the case of areas prone to flooding, should be just as "imperative secure them the "building levees adequate funds for expansion, or areas of rolling, if you prefer, upstream of the cities themselves should they find themselves living with a river (good Part of the villages).
But this, unfortunately I am convinced, will not be made except in small part (too many negative examples), perhaps on the grounds of palliative care (risk minimization), and if you ask why we do not delude yourself that the answer will always be .... "You can not do, it costs too much!"

A DAY stage technology

Columbus Avenue this morning on the beach before a patrol "special" brigade was training with the new media: the SEGWAY electrical, suitable for both ground to the shore.
As in other locations in Italy (Rome, Bologna and Ravenna) also Adriatic town has adopted these means are suitable for fast and silently patrol the stretch the waterfront and the waterfront, so useful for revealing the contrast to 'illegal trading at the beach.

According to the security portal ( asaps.it ) last year four of these vehicles, went into action on the beaches of Ravenna, the city administration to have cost about 25,000 €.

The Segway, also known as Ginger, is the brainchild of Dean Kamen which presented a prototype in 2001. It 'an electric vehicle, electric drive, advanced technological concept: a type of skateboard that allows you to move forward, stop and reverse, with simple movements of the passenger-driver remains in perfect balance even when stationary. All thanks to the gyroscopic rotation sensors solid state (whatever that means !!!).

Groton Groton Beach Strong earthquake

Starfish: the pleasure of eating good fish on the beach in Groton, with a splendid view of the historic town. From the shore you can see the old house on the hill. Its medieval village facing the sea.

Groton has ancient origins. There are human tracks dating back to Neolithic times. Its territory was discovered a necropolis dating from the seventh picena-V century BC.

Journalism assault

As a journalist I wonder what kind of information can offer a packed thanks to the stupidity of a "sent" in the night, between the cars of the poor devils exhausted by hours of nightmare caused by earthquake that devastated their homes and often the lives of relatives, friends and acquaintances? The news first? But who said that the information can be crucial to bother with human beings who already shaken by a tragic event like the one that hit the Abruzzo, and L'Aquila in particular?

How sad to see folly of a "send" when families camped on a car alarm, and listen to silly questions like "how come here in the car?"
Or see our heroine still knock the windows of the car that used to house two people who had finally fallen asleep (after hours when they powerless to breakage of dreams and hopes for the future) just to ask them "why do not you eat? Not you hungry? "

E 'journalism this? Why shoot in the face of the victims, who finally fell asleep exhausted, the lights of the camera?
Or, worse yet, questions like "How does it feel to have lost a dear
?"

questions are simply idiotic, useless, stupid, because they can not be answered. What can you say the firefighter digging with their hands in hopes of finding even a breath of life, "journalist" who asked him, in front of a city made virtually irriconoscile by the earthquake that has disrupted "thinks that there is someone under the rubble? " or even "think you can still find quelcuno alive?

Other instead sent with microphone and camera are placed where they should not be, hampering ambulances and rescue vehicles, say what? What you need to move to avoid hampering rescue vehicles while behind the brigade fire curse to all and sundry "inviting" with eloquent gestures, to abandon the station.

And what about the visit to L'Aquila head of state Giorgio Napolitano, who impatiently from the intrusiveness of some photographers, they has an apostrophe with sacred "does not break."
In short, the concept of information must not be clear to some journalists believe if
important to tell with such trivialities.
At this moment I receive a statement of the City of Alexandria, announcing the sending of Aquila at a time of a column of vehicles organized by our Civil Defence containing food, tools such as lighting balloon to counter actions of looting at night, electric generators , field kitchens and tents.

, we hope you will agree, is the news that we feel communicate in emergency situations.
